We run a self catering establishment with 3 cottages. We have a guest registration folder set up for guests to write their details according to 'law'. On presenting this folder and asking very politely if they could fill it out I get some rather interesting comments...Never had to do this before,..Who is trying to track us now, etc. Some kind guest filled him self into the book as Micky Mouse! and we are 4 star?? Am I the only one trying to keep legal?

I let a self catering property and have not heard of this one. I have a guest book for comments but not a registration book. Where have you found that this is a legal requirement? I don't want to knowingly be breaking the law!

The information about Registration can be found under the 'Legislation guidance' heading on the left on this page. The section is 'Guests' and there it is under 'Registration'. It all looks fairly straight forward really except some guests think it is not for them even when it is explained that it is LAW!

This legislation is so outdated it has been earmarked by the Government for repeal under a better regulation review. It is past its 'use by' date and I have to take down details of passports from Polish people who live and work in this country but not Austrailian people because they are commonwealth citizens.
Visit Britain could do us all a big favour if they lobbied the government to get on and repeal this legislation.

Quite agree, VB could ask Gvt to repeal this legislation. We take cards and all their info on booking so any info required by the police (which is what it is for apparently) could easly be passed on if necessary.

Thank you for bringing this matter to our attention. We are always keen to hear about the issues that you are facing and to help where-ever possible. I have passed you query onto the policy teams at both VisitBritain and VisitEngland for them to consider how best we can help you to take this forward.

We have had B&Bs in various locations since 2000. We have therefore had thousands of guests, luckily. And thousands of paper registration forms which we dutifully pass to the guests and they (mostly) dutifully fill in.
We have a whole cupboard dedicated to this paper mountain, no way of finding any individual booking really - how long do we have to keep this stuff for anyway ?
