The text below is taken from today's feature "How to set up a Wi Fi Network"

The typical bed and breakfast situation implies a router that serves everyone in the property. However, you would be unwise to share your own password with your guests because they could then have access to computers on your network, which are connected to the same router.

Can anyone explain how guests could have access to my files just because thay are connected to the same router.

Yes it is true and I have done it to demonstrate that it does work.

Depending on the type of router, most ones you buy for domestic use also act as a network hub for example the hub allows you to print documents via a printer plugged into the router so that two PCs can use the same printer.

Everyone on a network could potentially have access to your files on any computer on that network. So the threat is real.

But the answer is simple, two routers in series. One connected to your phone line which broadcasts your guests WiFi signal to which you give them the password. Then you have a second router which plugs into the first one (just as any PC would). It gets its internet connection through the first router but has its own firewall and own password for your PCs either plugged into router via Cat5 cables or on your private WiFi network.

Simples!
