I am middle-aged and an old-fashioned caterer and I am having a lot of difficulty in people in business trying to sell something to me and calling me by my first name – without leave to do so. It might be my age and the way I was brought up, but I find it very rude and somewhat disrespectful. Guests/customers can call me what they like as they are paying the money. I do feel it an insult that people in business have this need to call everybody by their first name. Including, it has to be said; this Accommodation Knowhow, Visit Britain website! I don’t know these people; I can’t call them by their first name as they have not left a name.
How many middle-aged and an old-fashioned people out there think this American-style familiarity is right? Business people, selling products and services to us should be more respectful. I do not empathise with these people being familiar, cosying up to prospective customers/clients – which is, I understand, they believe they are doing. For me it is just plain offensive!
