We use the term en-suite to mean a bath/shower within the room or through a door in the bedromm to a another room which is the bath/shower room and for exclusive use of that bedroom
We use the term private bathroom to refer to a bath/shower room adjecent to the bedroom which has sole use of the bath/shower room.
The above is detailed on our website and on the major on-line booking company we use.

That has never caused, in 10 years, any problem with guests until today ,when a guest complained her room, with a private bathroom, was not en-suite.

As I said its made clear in our information and its discounted to £45 with breakfast per night- not a bad price for a 5 star gold award b& b !

Thoughts please

You're right, she's wrong. Classic case of a guest not reading/absorbing the information in front of their eyes.

Cheers,

Martin.

Some people just try it on.
I don't really understand the prejudice against a private bathroom (unless it's further than a few steps from the bedroom. Rather that than a poky en-suite in a cupboard which is what you often get.

This is off my specialist topic but as a guest I would expect to be able to walk to a private bathroom in private. If I cannot walk to thebathroom naked, I would not feel that it was private enough. The whole point of private facilities is that you do not need to get dressed to access them overnight.

If that is the case, how would you expect a private bathroom to be different to an en-suite? And what term should we use for a bathroom that is for the exclusive use of one bedroom - an exclusive bathroom?

I provide bathrobes in all my guest rooms and I do think that essential for the room with the private bathroom. (The others only tend to be worn if guests use the hot tub).
The room for which I have a private bathroom is a twin which works well. Guests who are friends as opposed to partners appreciate the extra privacy that the bathroom offers rather than being en-suite.

So what is a bathroom called that is for your exclusive use but not connected to your room but is down a short corridor? A public bathroom is one that is shared by several rooms. We have always called it a "private bathroom" and everyone seems to understand that it is not en-suite but for your private use and hence not connected to the room. We have had it since 1989 and never had a problem with this terminaology and we do provide bathrobes so that you can shuffle down the corridor in private.

Ensuite is bathroom within the room
Private Bathroom is exclusively for bedroom and adjacent preferably
Share Bathroom is used by several rooms.

I describe each B&B room with a full description of bathroom and for the Private Bathroom a line saying it is immediately next door to the bedroom with robes provided.

I have one Private Bathroom (huge bathroom) and lately more and more guests are just not understanding what it is as of course they haven't read any of the information anywhere.

A sign that more and more guests expect B&Bs to be super uber hotels!!! Agree with earlier comment, better a huge bathroom next door to bedroom than a shower in a wardrobe!

If the corridor is used by other guests then I dont think you can call that bathroom private, even if you provide robes!

we have had a nightmare with this and now say on our description Private External Bathroom on all our online booking agents but I can't make them read. There is a reason it is cheaper than an ensuite room everywhere else Duh!:

They'll think it's outside!
