London hotels achieving record room rates

Last Updated: 15 Jan 2008

London's chain hotels continued to achieve record room rates according to a recent HotStats survey from TRI Hospitality Consulting.

Hoteliers in the capital saw a growth rate in November of 8.9%, taking the average room rate to a new high of £125.85. Profit grew by 7.9% to £82.19 per available room.

Jonathan Langston, managing director TRI Hospitality Consulting said: 'London's hotel market continued its outstanding run of room rate and profit growth in November. Average occupancy remained the highest in Europe. There are no signs that falling overseas spend or economic uncertainty are having any impact on the London hotel market.'

Other UK hotels' performance

Profit and average room rate continued to increase last month at other UK chain hotels, according to the 462 hotels surveyed. Income before fixed charges (IBFC) rose by 5.6% to £52.81 per available room.

The average across the rest of the country, however, only showed minimal improvement, with daily IBFC increasing by just 1.2% to £36.42. But some cities, such as Aberdeen, Brighton and Edinburgh, did outperform the provincial average in both actual profit per room and growth.

As part of the EU Directive on Tourism Statistics, the UK must regularly report a range of statistics, including monthly occupancy rates for serviced accommodation. VisitBritain and the other national tourist boards therefore collate national and regional data from a sample of establishments. This is used to calculate occupancy rates for the UK Occupancy Survey (UKOS). For more information, visit www.tourismtrade.org.uk.
