New website to blacklist undesirable guests

Last Updated: 17 Sep 2010

GuestScan is a new website launched recently that offers a service some accommodation providers will find very valuable by listing undesirable guests. The website is specifically aimed at small hotels, Bed and Breakfasts (B&Bs), holiday homes and camping sites and plans to help protect accommodation providers against what it calls “nightmare guests”.

The service is run on a subscription basis and will allow members access to an online database of known troublemakers, thereby allowing them to filter undesirable guests before taking the booking. The database can be accessed via PC, laptop or smartphone, enabling members to be able to screen potentially damaging guests anytime, anywhere.

The database is compiled with the help of Guestscan members who can report bad behaviour, thus helping in growing the list of undesirables in a controlled and organic way. Every new entry is thoroughly checked by Guestscan before it is published, and if the targeted guest has not been notified by the author of the post, Guestscan will notify them, giving them the chance to appeal this listing.

Guestscan says it complies with the Data Protection Act and that it has been advised by the Commissioner for Information Services that they will “not object to this service”. At the same time, Guestscan will protect itself from unfounded reports by making its members liable for malicious reporting.
