Olympic Games benefit to reach further than London

Last Updated: 15 Oct 2010

The benefits of the Olympic Games will be felt further afield than London according to VisitBritain, which published information on how the Olympic Games can benefit businesses in the capital and beyond.

Although the main venues are in the London area, almost half the tickets available for the Games are for events that will be held in Portland, Eton Dorney, Hadleigh Farm, Broxbourne and at football stadia in the Midlands, Cardiff, Glasgow, Manchester and Newcastle.

In addition to these, there will be plenty of events before and after the Games, and inspired by them, such as athletes’ training camps, test events, live sites, fan zones and the Cultural Olympiad, which will take place before the Games begin.

The exposure generated by the Games will also have a long-term effect on the tourism industry in the UK with visitors to the Games and spectators at home both discovering parts of the country they would not otherwise have known about. VisitBritain estimates that two-thirds of the boom in the number of tourists to the UK will come within the four years following the Games themselves.

In order to take full advantage of this boost in tourism, VisitBritain published a guidance on the 12 steps to follow to prepare for the Olympic Games, which can be found on their website.
