VisitBritain has just published the results of a census to measure the level of serviced accommodation stock across England's regions.
The census was needed because the lack of a compulsory registration scheme for serviced accommodation establishments in England means that reliable figures on accommodation stock are difficult to come by.
It was conducted using VisitBritain’s own extensive database of accommodation, supplemented and checked with data from our regional partners and commercial organisations.
The census revealed almost 30,000 serviced establishments in England (hotels, guest accommodation, B&Bs and serviced apartments). These have almost 600,000 rooms available and enough beds to sleep 1.2m people!
Where the type of establishment was known, 41% were classified as bed and breakfasts, while 24% were hotels. Also identified were guesthouses (18%), farms (6%) and inns (6%). With almost 7,000 establishments, the South West was the region with the most serviced accommodation.

A census of non-serviced accommodation was also carried out. Click on www.tourismtrade.org.uk to see the breakdown of the non-serviced census.
