Switchover to digital television

Last Updated: 01 May 2007

Digital television is on its way and everyone will benefit – more channels to choose from, better sound and picture quality, and enhanced information services. It is important to ensure all televisions, connections, aerials and cabling are ready, so start planning and budgeting now.

The switchover to digital television will begin in 2008 with analogue becoming redundant by 2012. This will happen in stages by ITV region across the UK with the following start dates: 2008: Border (the Caldbeck transmitter, serving Dumfries & Galloway, Cumbria and the Isle of Man, will switch over at the end of 2009)
  • 2009: Westcountry, Wales, Granada
  • 2010: West, Grampian, Scottish
  • 2011: Central, Yorkshire, Anglia
  • 2012: Meridian, London, Tyne Tees, Ulster

Broadcast signals do not have precise boundaries. Digital UK is currently developing a postcode database that will tell viewers which transmitter is closest to them.

If you are considering replacing equipment, a good-quality flat-screen television can create more space and add style to the look of a room. Bear this in mind, as it will enhance the calibre of your overall facilities which, during an assessment, is reflected in the quality scores you receive for your bedrooms. When buying new television products or services look for the digital ‘tick’ logo.
