The Institute of Hospitality recently noted that research found too many accommodation providers offering unsecured WiFi services to their guests. For instance, up to 90% of Bed and Breakfasts in Wales that offer WiFi to guests do not require the use of a password or the signing of a terms and conditions agreement.
This leaves accommodation providers wide open to cyber attacks and hackers, with the potential loss or theft of business data or the use of their network for criminal purposes. Although the Digital Economy Act will initially not make businesses with networks of less than 400,000 users liable for illegal actions undertaken on their networks, unsecured WiFi networks still pose a very real risk to accommodation providers and their guests.
Configuring a WiFi network to ensure it is secure from outside tampering is not a complicated process, and the Institute of Hospitality offers a full guide to do so on their website.
